The Assistant Director of Development, Gift Planning will serve as a planned giving officer on behalf of the University of Maryland for University Relations. The successful candidate will be responsible for the identification of potential major-gift donors. They will identify and engage regional development markets in collaboration with development colleagues, and maintain development travel schedules. This person will initiate first alumni contact for the university, and coordinate with all development staff and gift stewardship activities with donor relations.
The Assistant Director of Development, Gift Planning will work closely with the college/unit fundraising programs, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Leadership Annual Giving, Regional Giving team and the Alumni Association on strategies for donors related to those areas. Further, they will coordinate strategic development events and development of a major gifts pipeline to build a qualified prospect base for the university. The person will serve as a liaison between the faculty, staff, students and potential supporters (individuals, corporations and foundations). Similarly, they will also serve as a liaison among the faculty and staff of the assigned unit(s) and/or project(s), and the Office of the Vice President for University Relations.
The position requires the availability to work evenings and weekends.
Significant travel is required (60-70% of time with 20-30% out of the immediate area) .
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in fundraising required, with at least two (2) of those years in the planned giving field. Candidates must demonstrate success in major gifts fundraising.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Self-motivated professional with the ability to assertively create and cultivate relationships, and a demonstrated ability to solicit and close major gifts.
- Knowledge of planned giving fundamentals and vehicles to close basic planned gifts.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must, in addition to an ability to relate with department chairs, center directors, and research faculty in order to articulate to diverse external audiences our priorities, accomplishments, and aspirations.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a large university with an integrated development program.
- Proficiency in computers, databases, PGCalc or planned giving software and other systems.

The Director of Planned Giving is responsible for growing Ocean Conservancy’s Planned Giving program – a successful, organizationally-supported revenue stream which raises $2-5 million annually. The Planned Giving department encompasses a dynamic planned giving team of four and enjoys close partnerships across Development, Membership, and Finance.
- Manages a seasoned and dedicated Planned Giving team who collectively is responsible for estate administration, a robust marketing program, donor stewardship, cultivation and solicitation, and the efficiency and success of the program.

- At least ten years of experience in estate planning and/or high level development experience required. Experience needed in cultivating donors, explaining planned giving options, and soliciting and closing planned gifts.
- At least three years of experience managing a diverse, successful multi-person team, with a track record of creating a positive team culture and helping staff grow in their roles.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, organize, direct and control deferred giving activities that have achieved their goals and objectives.
- Must have excellent communication and be a team player.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.
- Experience with Raiser’s Edge and planned giving software such as PG Calc, a plus.

The Individual Giving team seeks a motivated and creative fundraiser ready to expand and focus the Center’s planned giving program. The Manager of Planned Giving maintains a portfolio of prospective and active planned giving donors and is integral to the larger Kennedy Center community. This position reports to the Director of Individual Campaigns and Planned Giving and must also work collaboratively with other development management and staff, as well as with external vendors.
The incumbent manages his/her time, resources, and work load to maximize productivity and financial results; exercises discretion; evaluates complex internal and external relationships; and regularly takes initiative to advance campaign objectives and goals. In addition to meeting annual fundraising goals, the Manager is also a member of the Development Department’s Management team, and shares a responsibility for Department-wide efforts such as the four-year Development strategic plan and cross-team “pillar” initiatives. This position oversees a team of two, including one Assistant Manager and one Assistant.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Front-line Fundraising (50%):
- Personally identifying and cultivating planned giving prospects and stewarding a portfolio of current legacy and planned gift donors.
- Discussing gift planning vehicles, creating illustrations, and drafting contracts to maximize current, deferred, and blended gifts for prospective and current legacy donors.
- Resolving agreements and contributions of current, deferred, or blended gifts, such as bequests, beneficiary designations, life income gifts, charitable gift annuities, retirement plans, etc., in coordination with relevant internal offices and external estate executors/administrators.
- Building ongoing relationships with the portfolio of current donors, identifying opportunities for growth.
- Provide support and direction to other front line fundraisers in the department, including NSO and WNO to secure their own planned giving prospects.
- Coordinating donor portfolio management and overall planned giving strategy with additional Kennedy Center, NSO, and WNO development staff.
Planning and implementation of Planned Giving activities throughout the institution (35%):
- Implementing a marketing plan to promote planned giving opportunities to prospective donors through all communication mediums.
- Overseeing accurate record-keeping of commitments, prospects, progress of strategic plans, and revenue (realized and deferred) and expense budgets.
- Managing general prospect research, acquisition, and stewardship of legacy donors, in coordination with Annual Giving and Major Gifts staff.
- Assisting with training Kennedy Center, NSO, and WNO development staff regarding charitable giving guidelines, deferred giving and estate planning best-practices, and planned giving protocol.
- Managing relationships with external financial bodies, attorneys, financial advisors, etc. to maintain and regularly assess the strength and potential of the planned giving campaign.
Oversight and management (15%)
- Providing oversight, guidance, supervision, and appropriate delegation of tasks for one Assistant Manager and one Assistant and relevant staff across the office.
- Providing departmental oversight, strategic guidance, management, related to all 50th Anniversary fundraising activities.
- Maintains current knowledge of the funding industry, specifically current tax laws, statutes, gift planning materials, and trends in philanthropy via all available means.
- Serves on the Management team of the Development Department and participates in a departmental pillar in a leadership role.
- Responds to the needs and requests of Kennedy Center management and staff in a professional and expedient manner.
- Adheres to all employer policies and procedures.

- Bachelor’s degree required. An advanced degree or training in a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of five years’ development or related experience required, with specific experience in planned giving.
- Proven success working in a matrixed environment and collaborating with colleagues to close complex and creative gifts.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and training in deferred giving instruments, estate planning principles, and planned giving trends.
- Experience managing a highly competent team.
- Experience with Tessitura and PG Calc is preferred.
- Participation in an industry association (such as AFP or CGP) is appreciated.

The Director of Planned Giving is responsible for managing and overseeing the planned giving program and Rockmore Society, a legacy recognition membership. Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, this position will establish program priorities and strategy in coordination with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation’s organizational goals and The Honor & Educate Campaign.
Serving as the Scholarship Foundation’s lead generator of planned gift commitments, the Director is expected to be the subject matter expert on deferred and non-cash methods of giving and drive the strategy, solicitation, forecasting and reporting of planned gifts and prospects.
The Director of Planned Giving will work with the Directors of Development to assist in strategy and execution of solicitations within each major gift portfolio; while maintaining a portfolio of planned giving prospects including the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. As such, the Director should possess a demonstrated ability to build relationships with donors and prospects that lead to major, blended and planned gifts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Identify planned giving prospects and further utilize research from prospect scoring and gift data to continually monitor donors and new prospects.
- Disseminate prospects and planned giving related information to Directors of Development and serve as subject matter expert to development staff.
- Contact all direct mail responders that indicate an interest in making a planned gift and ensure proper follow up or adjust database management of donors based upon responses.
- Generate $600,000 in booked revenue from realized estate commitments, irrevocable deferred commitments (CGAs, DCGAs and Irrevocable Remainder & Lead Trusts) and outright gifts (cash, securities and non-cash assets).
- Secure $2,400,000 in revocable deferred commitments to include bequests in wills and revocable trusts and beneficiary designations in retirement plans or insurance policies.
- Maintain and establish relationships with current and new investors by making a minimum 12-16 visits per month.
- Proactively cultivate prospective planned gift investors identified through research.
- Work with direct mail vendor to create and manage planned giving mailings throughout the year designed to identify planned giving prospects and generate leads.
- Conduct all follow up calls, visits and correspondence based on responses to mailings and leads generated by staff and volunteers, and requests for information from prospective investors.
- Utilize PG Calc or other software to provide gift illustrations and options to prospective donors and staff.
- Ensure proper data entry of planned gifts received and maintain tracking of planned giving gift details within Raiser’s Edge.
- Maintain Prospect and Solicitation Tracking system in Raisers Edge.
- Secure testimonials of planned giving donors and provide updated content for use in communications materials, including web.
- Produce performance reports and track progress with prospects and solicitation to forecast revenue.
- Track and submit required compliance reports to states that require documentation for CGAs.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.
- 3-5years of planned/estate giving related experience.
- Substantial experience with a major fundraising database (Raiser’s Edge a plus).
- Experience with PG Calc, Crescendo or other gift illustration software.
- Proven track record of success building donor relationships and closing gifts.
