Development Director

The Development Director is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and securing new and ongoing gifts from individuals and foundations in support of Baltimore Yearly Meeting’s (BYM) ministries and programs. The Development Director builds relationships and affinity for BYM and for the future of the Religious Society of Friends throughout the Yearly Meeting. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of relevant and successful fundraising experience.

The Organization: BYM is a vibrant organization comprised of more than 50 worshipping communities and 6,500 members across the mid-Atlantic region. Since the first great gathering of Friends in Maryland in 1672, BYM has had a long, rich history of worship and social witness. This vibrancy is demonstrated today in an array of programs, the largest of which is a residential summer camping program serving approximately 550-600 campers each year, complemented by a year-round youth activities program. Friends of all ages are invited to attend our weeklong residential Annual Session in August. Adult programs through the year include a Spiritual Formation Program and an annual Women’s Retreat. Other programs support local Meetings, helping to develop leadership and spiritual nurture. BYM staff, along with numerous volunteer committees and working groups, support a wide range of activities, including peace and social justice. BYM is dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion throughout the Yearly Meeting.

The Development Program: This BYM program focuses on developing a more explicit sense of stewardship, a shared culture of giving, and intentional planning for the future. The Development Committee guides, supports, and assists the Development Director in advancing the Committee’s priorities. The next steps for the program include increasing the number of donors and the average size of gifts, developing major gifts, increasing planned giving, and developing the camp alumni network.

The Development Director reports directly to the General Secretary and works closely with the Development Committee, other committees, and staff to carry out a comprehensive development plan. The Director communicates the importance and value of BYM to its membership, to Local Meetings, and to the many non-Quakers who participate in BYM’s camping program. This work is carried out by nurturing an understanding of the interconnectedness between members, Local Meetings, and BYM and of the spirituality of giving.

Position Summary/Objective:

This position is responsible for providing planned giving/legacy programs throughout IFAW's US office. Raising awareness of the importance of planned gifts and bequests to a wider audience, both internally and externally. Position works with a portfolio, primarily focused on cultivation, solicitation and closure of bequests/planned gifts.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage a planned giving program meeting agreed targets and goals as developed;
  • Achieve an agreed number of new legacy pledges, planned gifts and enquiries annually in consultation with the Legacy Director.
  • Plan, organise and follow-up a series of cultivation and stewardship events at locations of appropriate interest, on an on-going annual basis with a view to generating opportunities for developing new enquiries and pledges.
  • Bring visibility to the recognition society, Future Fund for Animals and develop a stewardship program in coordination with other markets;
  • To be a first point of contact and possess knowledge on planned giving and legacy matters for all US based staff. Act as signatory and point of contact on all legacy appeals, materials and digital assets.
  • Responsible for ensuring central legacy appeals reflect the needs for the US market working closely with the Direct Marketing team to ensure all content is relevant.
  • Engage key legal and estate planning contacts, keeping them informed and supplied with up to date IFAW legacy information, visiting firm's offices and liaising with fee earners dealing with probate matters.
  • Build relationships with staff and educates colleagues to ensure they understand the importance of legacy and planned giving income to the charity and to equip and motivate them to promote them regularly and with confidence.
  • Update supporter details in our supporter database "Team Approach" ensuring any planned gift enquiry or pledge information is kept up to date and is held within the parameters of the data protection regulation.
  • Build excellent working relationship with the US legal team to enhance knowledge of legacies being received by IFAW and develop understanding of the ideal profile of legacy donor to IFAW.
  • In collaboration with the Legacy Director, ensure all US regional staff receive appropriate legacy/planned giving training on a regular basis and are kept up to date on what is happening on both a local and national level, including undertaking inductions for all new starters in the US development team.
  • In collaboration with teams within the Development Department and Program staff, develops strategies and tactics to enhance integrated fundraising projects.
  • Assists in any other special projects as requested by Legacy Director and US Country Director.

General Description:

The Senior Director of Planned Giving is responsible for leading a dynamic Planned Giving Program to achieve established fundraising goals, while inspiring new growth pathways for the program. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience of growing a program along with a core competency in securing and documenting bequest intentions, life income gifts and other forms of planned gifts from a portfolio of potential and qualified prospects. The Senior Director is also responsible for ensuring The Wilderness Society adheres to best practices for legacy giving and should have experience with complex giving vehicles.

The Senior Director helps inspire the TWS Governing Council to become Planned Giving Ambassadors for the organization and embraces a holistic culture of philanthropy in his/her collaborative approach. This leader works to develop a cultivation and solicitation strategy for all planned giving prospects and leads their team in executing this strategy, will also providing support to the Major Gifts Team to facilitate appropriate planned giving discussions with current and potential major donors. S/he works closely with the Donor Relations Team to ensure that all legacy donors are appropriately stewarded, and with the Finance team to ensure all instruments are understood and approved and that donor intent is followed and clearly articulated.

Working closely with donors and their advisors, the Senior Director takes primary responsibility for marketing Planned Giving vehicles and working with professional, legal, tax and financial advisors to achieve donor goals. The s/he will work as a leader in a team environment to promote gift planning among all TWS constituencies.

The Senior Director, Planned Giving plays a critical role in establishing and reinforcing an inclusive organizational culture that is grounded in trust and accountability to shared goals and outcomes. S/he will be part of the Sr. Philanthropy Team, providing feedback and support directly to the VP of Philanthropy. Additionally, the Senior Director will be part of TWS’ Senior Leaders Group, made up of members across all areas of TWS’ work to address issues around workplace culture.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Directs and oversees the Planned Giving program; supervises two Gift Planning Program Specialists, both based in Washington DC office.
  • Works to manage an aggressive Planned Giving marketing program utilizing in-depth analytics to create customized marketing models for the TWS donor base, strategically marketing the program to prospects and existing donors, as appropriate.
  • Develops and manages revenue goals and provides regular accounting to the VP of Philanthropy, the Executive Team and the Governing Council regarding known gifts and expectancies. Prepares regular progress reports and analysis on the status of the Planned Giving program.
  • Develops and fosters ongoing programs to educate Governing Council members and staff about planned giving vehicles. Inspires planned giving participation at the Governing Council and staff level.
  • Manages the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship for a portfolio of current and prospective legacy donors, including Governing Council members, and conducts personal visits with Legacy Club members and prospects.
  • Develops planned giving strategies to assist major giving colleagues in identifying and soliciting planned gift prospects within their donor portfolios.
  • Manages content on the planned giving website and updates as necessary to reflect current legal requirements and/or changes.
  • Participates in appropriate professional organizations and maintains an understanding of current tax codes as related to estate gifts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Experience, Competencies, and Education:
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in development and demonstrated success in planned giving for a charitable organization, working with donors in complex gift planning programs, and a proven record of securing gift commitments.
  • Willingness to work with prospects and the ability to explain complex instruments in a clear, patient, and ethical manner.
  • Demonstrated strong management skills with the ability to mentor and motivate staff, to provide leadership and to build an effective, successful team.
  • Knowledge of current trends in the fundraising industry, particularly in Gift Planning. Thorough knowledge of technical aspects of estate planning principles and all forms of outright and deferred charitable gifts including charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, retained life estates, charitable lead trusts, and bequests.
  • Experience leading and managing teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives. This includes a track record of successful recruitment, cultivation, and retention of highly skilled staff across race and gender.
  • Extensive understanding of gift assets and gift implications including securities, real estate, and property and a working knowledge of income tax and estate tax implications of giving.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to treat sensitive information in confidence and establish trust with donors.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and PGCalc software for preparation of planned giving illustrations and bequest language.

The Gift Planning Officer (GPO) identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards donors, prospects, and their financial advisors for the purpose of raising bequest revenue and securing deferred gifts (charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts etc.) in support of the National Wildlife Federation’s mission to protect wildlife and wild places. The GPO will engage prospective and current donors through visits, phone calls, correspondence, and stewardship events, and develop tailored strategies for securing support from and stewarding donors.

This is an exciting time of growth and expansion at NWF, and this role is ideal for an entrepreneurial self-starter seeking opportunities to contribute meaningfully toward the goal of achieving substantial increases in planned and outright giving in the years ahead.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards donors and prospective donors through face-to-face visits, calls, emails and other written communications. Meets standards of performance metrics designed to monitor and evaluate performance.
  • Develops a portfolio of 100 - 125 planned gift prospects, tracking opportunities and building relationships.
  • Develops and implements highly tailored moves management strategies to effectively engage a portfolio of top prospects. Responsible for data input for all donor interactions (individual contacts, prospect management steps and stewardship efforts) in CRM database. Provides reports on activities, prospective pipelines and progress toward revenue and engagement targets regularly.
  • Stewards existing members of the Legacy Society, our gift planning recognition society, to confirm intended gift(s), maintain donor’s connection to NWF and increases financial support whenever possible. Participates in other donor stewardship events in the assigned region. Establishes and maintains close collaboration with philanthropy staff, program staff, regional offices and affiliates to advance gift planning efforts by providing excellent customer service and fostering continued internal collaboration. Ability to identify major gift prospects to assist in increasing the number of outrights gifts to NWF.
  • Networks across the industry to build awareness of benchmarking data and to share ideas.
  • Maintains professional aptitude in gift planning, keeping abreast of industry trends and changes to tax law, through conferences, seminars, specialized training, and professional literature (when appropriate and within the budgetary limits) to remain current in the gift planning field.

Skills & Qualifications:

S/he will provide budget, database, and program support for a team of gift planning fundraising professionals with a demonstrated commitment to customer service. People For the American Way is a national organization with over 1 million members dedicated to defending constitutional rights under attack by the Trump administration and the Right Wing and is deeply engaged in campaigns ranging from defending the Supreme Court to fighting Islamophobia to engaging Latino voters in elections. Our affiliate People For the American Way Foundation conducts research, legal, and education work on behalf of First Amendment freedoms and democratic values and works to diversify the leadership of the progressive movement through its Young People For youth leadership programs and its Young Elected Officials Network.

The Legacy Giving Coordinator is an integral part of People For the American Way’s fundraising team who will be responsible for sustaining and growing a newly revitalized planned giving program. The Coordinator helps implement our legacy marketing efforts, leads the personal cultivation and solicitation of planned giving prospects via personalized relationship building, manages the legacy giving society, and carefully oversees the administration of all open estate gifts. The Legacy Giving Coordinator reports to the Vice President for Constituent Engagement and works closely with both major gifts and membership/annual giving staff. This position is located in Washington, D.C., and requires at least 25% travel throughout the United States.


  • Manage marketing strategy to build awareness of legacy giving opportunities among our current donors and members, including planned giving newsletters, surveys, and letters.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 500 legacy donors and prospects and build relationships via phone calls, personalized email communications, ongoing written contact, and small events.
  • Generate new leads for the planned giving pipeline and develop strategy for cultivating and soliciting donors at different stages in the pipeline to close gifts.
  • Respond promptly to all planned giving inquiries and leads and ensure all donors with new gift intentions are thanked and recognized properly.
  • Maintain and promote the Liberty Circle, our legacy giving recognition society, and create stewardship plans to maintain ongoing relationships with donors in the Liberty Circle.
  • Visit at least 100-120 donors (or more) each year to qualify, cultivate, and solicit planned giving prospects and steward existing Liberty Circle members.
  • Closely track all open estates and work with estate representatives and People For legal and finance staff to ensure prompt and accurate processing of associated paperwork to facilitate timely distributions.
  • Communicate regularly with program staff to maintain awareness of People For programs and activities in order to effectively communicate about our work with donors.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all donor communications and prepare regular reports on campaign activities.
  • Help set, track, and report on program budget goals and KPIs.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years fundraising experience (or equivalent combination of education/experience); experience with planned giving or other relationship fundraising strongly preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including Word and Excel (including mail merge) and fundraising databases.
  • Outgoing personality with ability to enjoy direct communication with donors and prospects and the ability to collaborate with other staff and external vendors.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communications skills including experience in reviewing direct mail appeals, acknowledgment letters, emails, and other similar correspondence; experience with proofreading.
  • Ability to handle simultaneous projects and manage competing deadlines.
