The National Park Foundation seeks a dynamic, experienced Director to lead a rapidly-growing planned giving program as well as manage a portfolio of prospects and donors.

The ideal candidate will bring broad experience in planned gift fundraising to the Philanthropy department as well as extensive knowledge in successful strategies to aggressively grow the planned giving program. S/he must work well in a fast-paced work environment. S/he must also have a strong background as a relationship builder with experience motivating staff, working collaboratively with other fundraisers, and communicating complex concepts both internally and externally. The candidate will be a strategic thinker who has developed and implemented large-scale fundraising efforts.

The new Director will play a key role in growing an already successful program to secure future funding in support of the National Park Service. Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Proven success in closing traditional and complex planned gifts, including but not limited to, bequests, gift annuities, remainder trusts, and gifts of real estate.
  • Implement short- and long-term planned giving goals and strategies to build upon existing commitments and expand the current donor base pipeline to support the National Park Foundation’s mission.
  • Carry and manage a portfolio of planned giving donors and prospects for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Provide expertise in structuring complex gifts and working with colleagues to close new planned gift intentions.
  • Manage multi-channel marketing and communications efforts to promote planned giving to prospective donors and help build a robust pipeline of donors and prospects.
  • Collaborate with the other members of the Planned and Annual Giving team to develop a strategic, comprehensive approach to generating planned gift support for the Foundation, leveraging donors from both the mid-level and direct response program.
  • Oversee effective handling and processing of estate gift administration to ensure appropriate stewardship and closure of realized gifts.
  • Manage the internal budget, track all invoices/expenses, provide regular written reports to the Vice President, and manage vendor relationships.
  • Direct and oversee stewardship and recognition programs for planned giving donors and ensure effective regular communication and retention.

Essential Experience, Skills and Competencies:

The ideal candidate should have the following:

  • Thorough understanding of current laws and regulations pertaining to fundraising, especially planned gifts.
  • Must be knowledgeable of industry trends and best practices for marketing and communicating with gift planning audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining disciplined adherence to program goals.
  • Promote a collaborative fundraising culture and strong work ethic.
  • Must have strong written, oral, and listening skills with the ability to communicate effectively with donors and staff.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism while completing responsibilities in a precise, dedicated, and flexible manner.
  • Possess a positive, enthusiastic attitude as well as proven success as a strong, diplomatic mentor.
  • Strong moral character and ethical behavior.
  • Understanding of word-processing and office software, including, but not limited to, Raiser’s Edge, PG Calc or Crescendo, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of experience in planned giving fundraising for non-profit organizations.
  • Strong affinity for national parks with the ability to serve as a compelling ambassador for the National Park Foundation.
  • Campaign experience preferred.

American Humane seeks a dynamic, experienced Director of Planned Giving to develop, implement and manage a branded planned giving program for the organization. This position is based at American Humane’s national headquarters in Washington, DC and reports directly to Chief Marketing Officer.

Position Summary:

The Director, Planned Giving is responsible for seeking out opportunities and developing initiatives to identify, cultivate and solicit prospects to ensure a strong base of ongoing financial support for the organization. The Director will, in collaboration with the Chief Marketing Officer, be responsible for developing, implementing and managing a branded planned giving program as well as managing a portfolio of planned giving prospects and donors.

  • In collaboration with the Chief Marketing Officer and other fundraising staff, develop, implement and manage a branded planned giving program for American Humane.
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of planned giving prospects capable of making significant contributions to American Humane.
  • Develop and implement management strategies and approaches aimed at advancing donors into higher levels of giving and ultimately planned gifts.
  • Develop and offer educational opportunities and promotional materials around planned giving to fellow staff as well as prospects/donors.
  • Steward donors who have already expressed a commitment to planned giving.
  • Present regular updates to the Chief Marketing Officer and CEO.
  • Work and travel with staff to plan and conduct outreach, visits, presentations, and events.
  • Build relationships with annual donors to perpetuate their giving through planned gifts.
  • Ensure all planned giving donors receive appropriate recognition and consistent updates on the work of the organization.
  • Prospect by doing research and making phone calls to donors and financial advisors to develop a pipeline of long-term support.
  • Enter and track all activities, actions, call reports and deadlines in Raisers Edge Database and other tracking systems.

Essential Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.
  • 7- 10 years of planned giving experience strongly preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of estate planning, including wills, trusts and estate and gift tax laws highly desired.
  • Proven fundraising track record with experience identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high level donors.
  • Comfortable researching and analyzing large groups of data to uncover planned giving prospects.
  • Demonstrate drive and an ownership mentality.
  • Possess a client service attitude and ability to think on your feet as well as maintain positive demeanor at all times.
  • Conduct oneself with confidence on phone calls and in donor meetings.
  • Ability to emotionally and colorfully describe the incredible work done by American Humane to help animals.
  • Self-disciplined, able to prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines, strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer technology including applications for project and data management and electronic calendars (Raiser’s Edge, Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook preferred). Ability to quickly learn software specific to the department or institution.
  • Strong written (including proof reading and editing) and oral communication skills, including the ability to briefly summarize the essence of issues and means to address them. Use appropriate grammar in verbal or written form.
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling and securing confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional manner.
  • Make appropriate decisions or choices based on understanding alternative courses of action and potential repercussions.
  • Flexibility to work as part of a team or independently to meet goals in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Self-directed to take action and resolve issues.

  • Position based in Washington, DC headquarters office.
  • Standard working office environment.
  • Local and national travel will be required, estimated 25-50%.
