Division and Unit Overview:

The goal of the Development Office at the ACS is to advance the mission of the Society through the development of philanthropic partnerships. In its efforts to seek and secure private support for Society programs, the Development Office collaborates with a wide variety of groups within the Society and works to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward numerous individuals, corporations, and foundations. Members of the Development Office must be committed to the Society’s overarching mission and its core values; and, as representatives of the Society to its philanthropic partners, are expected to demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and discretion at all times.

Position Summary:

As a team member of the Development Office, this position contributes to the fundraising success of the Society by ensuring that donors have a positive and rewarding philanthropic experience. Reporting to the Manager of Development Communications, this position possesses the desire and ability to work cooperatively with various program leaders throughout the Society to effectively communicate the nature, value, and impact of Society programs to a wide range of audiences including current donors, prospective donors, and the general public.

Position Accountabilities:

  • Contributes to the development of high quality written reports, proposals, prospectuses, articles, presentations and letters on the Society’s programs and its mission.
  • Strictly adheres to reporting and proposal deadlines, maintaining a calendar of deadlines and proactively coordinating with development staff, program leaders, and finance staff to ensure that deadlines are met without fail.
  • Provides editorial assistance on a wide range of communications and outreach efforts, including social media posts and content on acs.org, working collaboratively and cooperatively with multiple parties often under tight time constraints.
  • Updates and edits acs.org websites that pertain to the Development Office and related programs.
  • Drafts appeal letters, the general acknowledgement letter, customized acknowledgement letters, and custom cover letters that accompany proposals and reports.
  • Liaises with Society program leaders and staff to stay abreast of program activities in order to facilitate effective and accurate communications.
  • Provides research on prospective donors, helping the team assess their suitability as prospects and developing initial cultivation strategies.
  • Contributes to the planning and execution of special events, which may occur in the evenings and/or during the weekend.
  • Contributes to the Development Office in other ways, assisting with general tasks as needed.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 3+ years professional writing experience, preferably in grant writing.
  • Advanced level proficiency in Microsoft Office suite – including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent communication skills are a must with proven ability to communicate professionally, persuasively and accurately at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend scientifically-oriented subject matter, synthesize it, and convey it to various audiences.
  • A self-starter, with demonstrated ability to organize time and set priorities, multi-task, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, fostering a spirit of cooperation between groups.
  • Demonstrated interest in science and/or science education desired. Experience in fundraising or working with scientists and/or in a scientific institution would be an asset.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Director of Development, Gift Planning will serve as a planned giving officer on behalf of the University of Maryland for University Relations. The successful candidate will be responsible for the identification of potential major gift donors. They will identify and engage regional development markets in collaboration with development colleagues, and maintain development travel schedules. This person will initiate first alumni contact for the university, and coordinate with all development staff and gift stewardship activities with donor relations.

The Director of Development, Gift Planning will work closely with college/unit fundraising programs, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Leadership Annual Giving, Regional Giving team, and the Alumni Association on strategies for donors related to those areas. Further, they will coordinate strategic development events, and develop a major gifts pipeline to build a qualified prospect base for the university. This person will serve as a liaison between the faculty, staff, students, and potential supporters (individuals, corporations and foundations). Similarly, they will also serve as a liaison among the faculty and staff of the assigned unit(s) and/or project(s), and the Office of the Vice President for University Relations.

The position requires the availability to work evenings and weekends.

Travel is required (60-70% of time with 30-40% out of the immediate area).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education(include licenses, certifications, etc.):

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience:

  • Seven years of fundraising or related experience, with at least 5 of those years in the planned giving field. Demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising and volunteer management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Self-motivated professional with the ability to assertively create and cultivate relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to solicit and close major and principal gifts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to relate with department chairs, center directors, and research faculty in order to articulate our priorities, accomplishments, and aspirations to these diverse external audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a large university with an integrated development program.

Preferences:

  • Master’s or other graduate degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with higher education/educational organizations.
  • Experience with other aspects of fundraising including planned giving.
  • Background or strong interest in academic fundraising.
