Desired Skills and Experience:

    • 8-10 years of experience with some combination of annual fundraising, planned giving, and solicitation of other major gifts.
    • Bachelor’s degree required with MBA or Master’s level degree in a related field preferred.
    • Prior nonprofit or private sector experience in a community foundation, sales/marketing or financial instruments and/or planned charitable gifts, providing financial and/or legal advice to high net worth individuals and/or major donor solicitation will be considered.
    • First-hand knowledge of the Jewish community, its customs and practices.
    • Knowledge of fundraising systems and experience in prospect identification.
    • Demonstrated knowledge or, or potential to learn, about the various methods and tools to make planned gifts and can articulate the advantages or disadvantages of each.
    • Experience in strategic and operational planning.
    • Experience as an executive responsible for revenue development, outreach and promotion.
    • Significant experience in management of membership or volunteer operations and working volunteer committees.
    • Strong donor-relations skills: proven ability in creating strategies to cultivate prospects and channel donor engagement leading to greater charitable support.
    • Strong supervisory skills to sustain performance of subordinates, nourish growth, and maintain a mutually supportive working environment.
    • Excellent verbal communication skills, or order to respond effectively and diplomatically with donors, volunteers, community leaders and the general public.
    • Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with peers in the organization and staff who do not report to the Director, and whose support is needed to implement goals and objectives of the position.

Sibley Memorial Hospital Foundation
Director, Development

Reporting to the Vice President of the SMH Foundation this position is responsible for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual major gifts and planned gifts. This position works in close collaboration with the Foundation board members, senior hospital staff, physicians, and outside key contacts.


  • Develop a portfolio of qualified prospects and annual work plan with goals for numbers of prospects and activity level to meet. Establishes fundraising targets in accordance with institutional standards to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts.
  • Recommends assignments of prospects to best fit the needs of the donor and institution.
  • Meet the goals and objectives for professional performance that include but not limited to a minimum of 300 prospects and executing 125 face to face visits a year. The revenue target is formulated by the Vice President of SMHF.
  • In the event of a capital campaign, assume additional responsibilities that will include campaign division leadership and solicitation.
  • In collaboration with Vice President, identify donors who have potential to have significant philanthropic or volunteer leadership contributions to SMHF. Profile these individuals and produce written strategies to engage these individuals.
  • Work with clinical staff to produce funding opportunities to meet specific department needs.
  • Maintain regular contact with hospital/clinical personnel to exchange information, coordinate activities and further the fund raising goal for specific areas.
  • Work to identify, help, motivate, educate and train physicians to successfully contribute to the growth of philanthropy at Sibley guiding them to be fundraising partners.
  • Plan and execute donor cultivation meetings. These events are hosted by a donor or physician in their home to introduce high net worth individuals to Sibley. Provide a follow up solicitations strategy for all attendees and invitees.
  • When needed, collaborate and coordinate donor strategies and actions with development staff of all Johns Hopkins departments.
  • Coordinate work with data management and research staff to accomplish professional goals.
  • Researches and writes stewardship reports, correspondence, and proposals.
  • Maintains current knowledge of best practices.

Gift Planning Associate

REPORTS TO: Director of Gift Planning

The Gift Planning Associate is responsible for maintaining and monitoring the Gift Planning budget and implementing all aspects of its marketing program, including: mail, telephone, website, social media and e-mail promotions; information request fulfillment and donor cultivation mailings; communicating with donors and prospects via telephone, mail, e-mail and occasional donor meetings when appropriate; and overseeing the Gift Planning interface with the donor database.


  • Work with the Director of Gift Planning to establish and monitor annual budget; create and maintain budget spreadsheets; track invoices; and reconcile expenses with monthly Finance reports.
  • Work with Director of Gift Planning and Gift Planning Manager to determine annual marketing strategy. Act as liaison to vendors to implement mail, telephone, website, social media and e-mail marketing efforts. Coordinate list selection, package design, postage, production, and all aspects of the outbound marketing program. Help conduct analysis and make recommendations based on results.
  • Research all new Wildlife Legacy Society members and identify and analyze prospects to help with cultivation strategies.
  • Coordinate responses to incoming information requests through letters, telephone calls and e-mails. Ensure that all requests receive response within 72 hours. Draft letters and gift annuity illustrations using PG Calc software. Ensure Gift Planning brochures, and other fulfillment materials are current and stocked.
  • Work with Director, Gift Planning Manager and Research Manager to identify best prospects for visits and cultivation (using database reports, and in some cases, phone calls or email queries). Research selected donors as needed. Help with visit packets and other visit logistics as needed.
  • Maintain Gift Planning information in ROI database. Input data on member inquiries, interests, concerns, and special requests. Liaise with Database Operations team to ensure timely delivery of recurring and customized response performance reports. Organize, track, and report monthly on marketing efforts.
  • Draft marketing copy, donor profiles and correspondence and form letters for Director's review.
  • Ensure integrity of marketing data in ROI database.
  • Manage logistics of inviting members to shared telephone seminars including planning, implementation and follow-up.
  • Conduct thank you and welcome calls to new members making a first gift between $250 and $999 and, as time allows, to existing members recently giving at the $250-$999 level.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.


  • Education: Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in related discipline
  • Experience: 2+ years of relevant development experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Other:
    • Excellent written communication skills, as well as proofreading skills and knowledge of grammar
    • Experience in database use and willingness to learn specialized software such as ROI and PG Calc

Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Philanthropy, the Senior Regional Philanthropy Officer, Eastern Region is responsible for managing relationships and securing support from a portfolio of major gift prospects (capable of making $100,000 over three years) to support the mission of The Wilderness Society. Responsible for managing a personal portfolio of between 75-125 donors, prospects, and suspects, and working closely with the Senior Director of Philanthropy, TWS philanthropy staff, program staff and volunteers to secure support for TWS’ campaign priorities. The Senior Philanthropy Officer focuses on identifying, qualifying and growing the pipeline of major gift donors, as well as prospecting and cultivating new donors to TWS with interests in various regions of TWS’ work across the country.

This position plays an important role in supporting an inclusive organizational culture that is grounded in trust and accountability to shared goals and outcomes.   • Qualifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards a portfolio of 75-125 major donors, prospects and suspects.
  • Participates fully in the development of Four Year Defense Fund including qualifying suspects recognized by our wealth screening.
  • Initiates, manages, attends and follows up on philanthropic special events.
  • Conducts 16-24 personal visits with suspects, prospects and donors per month, and participates in at least 30 strategic solicitations per year.
  • Raises a minimum of $1,500,000 per year, and develops a regional budget based on qualified suspects, prospects and MG donors with the Senior Director of Philanthropy
  • Gathers data, assesses prospects, and develops strategies designed to realize the current and life-time giving potential of individual prospects.

  • Supports the Major Gift philanthropic activities of the Conservation program staff in the Northeast and Southeast.

Experience, Competencies, and Education

  • 10+ years’ professional fundraising experience required.
  • Development office, major gifts and/or planned giving experience required.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills. Ability to understand, interpret, and synthesize complex programmatic information.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish schedules, set priorities, and meet deadlines. Must be able to balance and complete multiple projects and daily responsibilities.
  • Must be able to communicate with key program and executive staff, and possess the capability of motivating volunteers, professional staff, and donors.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to use problem solving skills for resolving donor questions and issues. Demonstrated businesslike manner and ability to function efficiently in a busy work environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Track record working successfully in teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives—across race and gender.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% of the time both nationally and regionally to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors on behalf of TWS.

The Director of Gift Planning plays a leadership role in marketing sophisticated gift plans and increasing the number of donors and their charitable commitments to Long Island University and its schools, colleges, and institutes. Reporting to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Director of Gift Planning will have proven experience helping alumni and friends meet their philanthropic and financial goals through thoughtful gift planning. The ideal candidate will have a track record of developing long-lasting and productive relationships between individual donors and/or investors and the institutions they support. This individual will cultivate and solicit a defined portfolio of prospective gift planning donors and will partner with development officers at all levels at assigned schools and units by joining them, their prospective donors, and their donors’ advisors in meetings and conversations to optimize commitments to LIU. The successful candidate will model effective donor-centric fundraising techniques, and will play a central role coordinating and coaching fundraisers and donors, donors’ attorneys, accountants, and financial planners through complex transactions. The best candidate will be proficient in major gift fundraising, and in technical areas such as estate and wealth planning, tax, complex charitable giving vehicles and structures, and the financial and personal issues affecting wealthy families.

Duties and Expectations

  • Manage a portfolio of planned giving prospects capable of making $100,000+ planned gifts.
  • Set a leadership example of collaborative gift planning at Long Island University.
  • Model best practices and behaviors for major gift and planned giving fundraising.
  • Assist with development and presentation of gift planning training sessions for fundraising staff, volunteers and faculty.
  • Serve as primary gift planning liaison for fundraisers and donors at assigned schools/units; build strong collaborative relationships by adding expertise and strategies to enhance giving through inclusion of gift planning components.
  • Develop and launch a sophisticated gift planning marketing program including newsletters, advertisements in select publications, robust website, timely correspondence to changes in tax law, stewardship programs and other pertinent marketing initiatives.
  • Follow-up with inquiries generated by targeted marketing in areas such as bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, charitable gift annuities, and complex assets.
  • Participates as a member of the University’s Advancement team, attending gift officer meetings, professional development activities, and other staff meetings as appropriate.


  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of related work experience required in major gift fundraising, gift planning, legal, and financial or other similar setting with a focus on philanthropic planning and attention to the individual donor/client/customer.
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully with high net worth individuals and successful closure of a variety of planned gifts. Must possess highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse population of donors and prospects.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration. The ability to work well both independently and collectively with other team members and in managing multiple highly visible projects and priorities.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to travel extensively to meet with donors and prospects and to participate in some weekend and evening events.
  • Mature judgment and discretion essential.
