Hillel International has an exciting opportunity for a fundraiser with experience in planned giving looking to play a key role in enhancing the function within the Hillel movement. Developing Hillel’s Planned Giving program, as an increasingly important source of flexible resources for the movement and a key strategy of the Hillel Centennial. As such, Hillel is seeking to expand and develop its holistic approach to testamentary giving including bequests and other planned giving vehicles for the Hillel movement while also providing support to its affiliates in building legacy giving programs. In this capacity, the Director of Planned Giving will play a key role in building a comprehensive program and supporting the identification and solicitation of planned giving prospects to bolster the Centennial Campaign.
To achieve success, you will need experience creating marketing tools and should be comfortable with the basic tax and legal concepts associated with planned giving at nonprofit institutions. Most importantly, you will be expert in communicating the depth and breadth of Hillel International — and why and how philanthropic support is vital to all that we do. You will deploy proactive approaches to identifying and cultivating planned giving donors, working closely with related staff across the organization to direct the Planned Giving operation and ensure alignment at all levels; including identification of planned gift donors, outreach and solicitation, communication, and messaging. This role will also provide planned giving support across the Hillel movement including facilitating planned gifts for local campuses and advising campus affiliates on planned giving efforts.
What You'll Own
- Shape and grow Hillel’s Planned Giving Program inclusive of donor acquisition, marketing plans and collateral.
- Launch and execute a revised planned giving program that collaborates with local Hillels and their own planned giving efforts.
- Work across the advancement team, and in partnership with the Hillel field, to develop a planned giving strategy that is informed and enlightened by data and knowledge of the existing opportunities and challenges.
- Manage and solicit a portfolio of planned giving prospects and donors.
- Oversee the stewardship strategy of Planned Giving donors, in collaboration with key partners, including Hillel International staff and field partners, ensuring ongoing engagement and interaction with these individuals.
- Together with our marketing consultants, manage targeted mailings and digital outreach to planned giving prospects, identify opportunities for virtual and (post-pandemic) in-person planned giving content for existing and new audiences.
- Align the planned giving efforts around the Centennial Campaign strategy and provide the leadership, training, and coaching needed for the entire movement to implement and achieve goals.
- Assist in the development of appropriate solicitation strategies and solicitation preparation for staff and lay leaders.
- Oversee and coordinate planned giving administration for Hillel International, accountable for planned gift administration and compliance (CGA contracts and gift agreements, letters of intent, and report quarterly to finance and the Advancement team on expected bequest income.
What You Do Well
- Familiarity with various planned giving vehicles and endowment campaign experience (e.g. bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, retirement plan)
- Prior experience as a creative and accomplished fundraiser at the development officer/planned giving officer level or managerial level, ready to direct the function
- Proven success in networking, soliciting, and closing major outright and deferred gifts and in building and maintaining relationships with major individual donors required; An existing network/relationships within the Jewish community are highly recommended.
- Proven success in helping build a planned giving program at another organization.
- Skills and discipline to use donor management systems and other technologies necessary in an international fundraising structure
- Strong presentation skills, with the ability to inspire individuals and audiences
- Excellent relationship management, written, and oral communication skills
- Innovative and self-directed, with extensive knowledge of the Jewish community, and well-connected to its resources.
- Graduate degree in Nonprofit Management, Jewish Studies, Fundraising/Sales, or other relevant area and/or CFRE designation a plus
